Football recruiting: Penn State vs. Michigan State

Looks like Penn State and Michigan State will butt heads a few times while recruiting for the Class of 2010...
When Mark Dantonio was at Michigan State as an assistant, he was one of the coaches responsible for East Coast recruiting. During that time he helped the Spartans land linebacker Seth Mitchell and defensive end Clifford Dukes, both from Maryland. The Spartans also reeled in All-American prospects like quarterback Jeff Smoker (Pennsylvania) and running back Tyrell Dortch (New Jersey).

Coming off a nine-win season and a New Year’s Day bowl, Dantonio targets several high-level prospects from the East Coast. A few of the notables:

Manheim Central (Pa.) defensive end Dakota Royer, from the same school Smoker attended, has had an offer from MSU for a while. The pass rush specialist has over 20 offers, including Penn State. Royer visited MSU practice during a recruiting tour and said, "it was exactly what I like to do and exactly how I like to play defense. It was a 'go get 'em' defense."

North Hunterdon Regional (N.J.) tight end Kevin Haplea is one of the best prospects at his position for the class of 2010. The Spartans offered Haplea, joining schools like Florida State, Oklahoma, and Penn State. MSU's use of the tight end in the offense is a positive in his recruitment. David Duran's recent departure opens up a scholarship at tight end.

The Spartans have also offered wide receiver Alex Kenney of State College High, who's also been offered by local school Penn State.
