More on Penn State's game against I-AA Indiana State

In a previous post we ripped regional Athletic Director of the Year Tim Curley for scheduling a game against I-AA Indiana State in 2011. After doing some digging we are even more dismayed--ISU is one of the worst teams in all Division I football. They have lost 26 consecutive games and are 1-44 since 2005. (Not typo, one win and forty-four losses.) Penn State has won two Big Ten Championships in that span.

There is little doubt that Larry Bird's alma mater will be the weakest opponent of the Joe Paterno era.

It should be an offensive feast for Penn State. In the past four seasons ISU has given up 50+ points 18 times. Last year's average game was a 42-8 loss.

Here are Penn State's and Indiana State's recent Sagarin rankings:

2005: PSU 4th, ISU 201st (239 Division I teams)
2006: PSU 18th, ISU 211th (241 Division I teams)
2007: PSU 26th, ISU 238th (242 Division I teams)
2008: PSU 8th, ISU 233rd (245 Division I teams)

If we're going to schedule a I-AA school, why not keep the money in-state with a game against a semi-decent team like Villanova?

But who are we to argue? At $450K the price was right. Sad.

UPDATE: Indiana State's losing streak ended at 33 games in late October, but the Sycamores finished the season 1-10.

That's 2-54 since 2005, with 20 games of giving up 50+ points. ISU finished 226th in the final 2010 Sagarin ratings.

Meanwhile, Villanova won the I-AA National Champoinship.
