Multiple Web sites are reporting that Iowa football running back Jewel Hampton sustained a knee injury during non-contact drills Friday. If confirmed, that would put a damper on the Independence Day weekend for Hawkeye fans. One way or the other, the payback will be a bitch on September 26th.
Hampton was projected as the starting tailback this fall, replacing all-American Shonn Greene. His absence would add to a list of off-season concerns, including a possible injury to offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde, the suspension of tackle Kyle Calloway, and the reported departure of linebacker Jacody Coleman.
