Third-string QB earns scholarship at Penn State

The team meeting ended, and the legendary coach commanded the redshirt freshman walk-on quarterback to stick around for a couple of minutes after the rest of his teammates left. Matt McGloin thought he was in trouble. All Joe Paterno had to offer was the best news his young quarterback had ever received...

McGloin, a redshirt freshman who is competing with true freshman Kevin Newsome for the backup job behind starting quarterback Daryll Clark, is now a scholarship football player at Penn State.

McGloin was ecstatic...
"It was just a great feeling. I was just trying to compete for that second job. This is what I wanted to do. I wanted to compete. I wanted to show the coaching staff I could do well. I'm very fortunate I got the opportunity.

"I really don't know what to say. I'm just speechless. I'm really just glad."
McGloin's father, Paul, talked about receiving the news...
"Here's the typical conversation when he calls home. 'What are you doing?' 'Nothing.' 'How's everything going?' 'OK.' That's pretty much the conversation.

"Tonight, I ask him, 'What are you doing?' 'Nothing much.' 'How's everything going?' Then he says, 'Dad, I got a scholarship.' I just told him, 'I'm so proud of you. You've worked so hard for this.'"
Penn State Clips has learned that kicker Collin Wagner has also been put on scholarship. That indicates to us that Wagner will continue as the #1 kicker this fall.
