Penn State Devon Smith small and fast...but is he 4.19 fast?

Exaggerating "measurables" is a time-honored sports tradition. And Penn State football is about nothing if not tradition...

According to Ron Musselman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, freshman speedster Devon Smith (pronounced DAY-von) isn't quite as big as the published roster would have you believe...
"Smith, is listed at 5 feet 7, 153 pounds, but he is at least 2 inches smaller and 10 pounds lighter."
Smith is clearly the fastest player on Penn State's team and perhaps the fastest player in Penn State history. But how fast is he?
"Wide receiver Graham Zug said Smith recently ran a 4.19 in the 40-yard dash at practice."
We're a little surprised that Musselman appeared to take Zug's comment at face value. It's complete nonsense, of course, as nobody in the world can run a 4.19. (No, not even Terrelle Pryor a/k/a the second coming of Usain Bolt.) Add two tenths to get to a more realistic number.

Sounds like Smith is also a quick study. Not many PSU players, let alone true freshmen, get a chance to run the ball, catch passes, and return kickoffs in the same game.

Chaz Powell is Smith's mentor...
"Devon is good. We want to keep him in the game plan. It's a long season. We're going to need him. Like I said before, be prepared for a lot of things from him. We're going to use him in a lot of key moments.

"I took him under my wing. I'm always telling him what to do, like when it comes to making a move or getting up the field. He's always asking questions. It's probably a little hectic for him now, a little stressful. It's his first year in a new environment and it's nothing like high school."
