Alarming Number of Retired NFL Players Suffering from Early Onset Alzheimer's

Share/Bookmark
A study commissioned by the National Football League reports that Alzheimer's disease or similar memory-related diseases appear to have been diagnosed in the league's former players vastly more often than in the national population--including a rate of 19 times the normal rate for men ages 30 through 49.
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
The study was conducted for the National Football League (NFL) by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.

An NFL spokesman, Greg Aiello, said the study did not formally diagnose dementia, that it was subject to shortcomings of telephone surveys, and that “there are thousands of retired players who do not have memory problems.”

I doubt that the five million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's and their families will take comfort in knowing that the vast majority of Americans do not suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia.

The Michigan researchers found that 6.1 percent of players age 50 and above reported that they had received a dementia-related diagnosis, five times higher than the cited national average, 1.2 percent.

I doubt that Aiello's comments will give comfort to NFL Players. If the numbers prove to be correct about one of every 16 retired NFL players could be expected to suffer from early onset Alzheimer's and dementia. It is likely that those numbers are going to climb as players age.

To read Dementia Risk Seen in Players in N.F.L. Study ...go here.

The study might be of concern to parents of college and high school football players.

Penn State engineer produces renewable hydrogen from winery wastewate

Share/Bookmark
The first demonstration of a renewable method for hydrogen production from wastewater using a microbial electrolysis system is underway at the Napa Wine Company in Oakville. The refrigerator-sized hydrogen generator will take winery wastewater, and using bacteria and a small amount of electrical energy, convert the organic material into hydrogen, according to a Penn State environmental engineer...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
"This is a demonstration to prove we can continuously generate renewable hydrogen and to study the engineering factors affecting the system performance," said Bruce E. Logan, Kappe professor of environmental engineering. "The hydrogen produced will be vented except for a small amount that will be used in a hydrogen fuel cell." Eventually, Napa Wine Company would like to use the hydrogen to run vehicles and power systems.

Napa Wine Company's wastewater comes from cleaning equipment, grape disposal, wine making and other processes. The company already has on-site wastewater treatment and recycling and the partially treated water from the microbial electrolysis system will join other water for further treatment and use in irrigation.

"It is nice that Napa Wine Company offered up their winery and facilities to test this new approach," said Logan. "We chose a winery because it is a natural tourist attraction. People go there all the time to experience wine making and wine, and now they can also see a demonstration of how to make clean hydrogen gas from agricultural wastes."

The demonstration microbial electrolysis plant is a continuous flow system that will process about 1,000 liters of wastewater a day. Microbial electrolysis cells consist of two electrodes immersed in liquid. Logan uses electrode pairs consisting of one carbon anode and one stainless steel cathode in his system rather than an electrode coated with a precious metal like platinum or gold. Replacing precious metals will keep down costs. The wastewater enters the cell where naturally occurring bacteria convert the organic material into electrical current. If the voltage produced by the bacteria is slightly increased, hydrogen gas is produced electrochemically on the stainless steel cathode.

The demonstration plant is made up of 24 modules. Each module has six pairs of electrodes.

"The composition of the wastewater will change throughout the year," said Logan. "Now it is likely to be rather sugary, but later it may shift more toward the remnants of the fermentation process."

The bacteria that work in the electrolysis cells will consume either of these organic materials.

The project is supported by Air Products & Chemicals, Inc., The Water Environmental Research Foundation Paul L. Busch Award, and other donors. Brown & Caldwell, an environmental engineering consulting firm, was contracted to build the demonstration plant. The Napa Wine Company is donating its facilities and wastewater for the demonstration.

Penn State falls ten spots in AP Poll, now 15th

Share/Bookmark
Last week we called Penn State's #5 ranking "madness." Unfortunately, we were proven correct on Saturday night.

Now we're ranked a more realistic (but still too high?) 15th-best in the country. Or 13th-best if you believe the idiocy of the Coaches' Poll...

Penn State ahead of Iowa and other Coaches' Poll follies

Share/Bookmark
The idiocy of the USA Today's Coaches' Poll knows no bounds...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
  • Iowa is undefeated. Iowa's non-con schedule was tougher than Penn State's. The Hawkeyes whipped the Nittany Lions last night at Beaver Stadium. So how is PSU ranked four spots ahead of Iowa?
  • Houston is undefeated, including a quality win against Texas Tech and a victory at Oklahoma State. So how in the world are the Cowboys ranked ahead of the Cougars?
  • Oregon has a road loss to #5 Boise State and victories against Utah and Purdue. Cal has wins over Maryland and Minnesota. The Ducks whipped the Bears 42-3 yesterday. So what's up with Cal at #19 and Oregon at #25?
If this were just a meaningless exercise it would be amusing. But this poll is one-third of the formula that chooses the BCS National Championship Game participants. At least the vote is a secret. Sigh...

Penn State defense deserved better

Share/Bookmark
Penn State's defense played more than well enough to win last night's debacle. As has become the norm in big games, they deserved better than they got from the offense...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
  • Iowa was held under 300 yards in total offense (298)
  • The defense forced two turnovers
  • Iowa was just 4 of 14 on third down
  • The defense gave up only 13 points and even those came on "drives" of just 37, 24, and 25 yards
Oh well, maybe we can start beating Iowa in wrestling. Sigh...

#1 Penn State women's volleyball sweeps another weekend

Share/Bookmark
Lost in the disappointment of the football teams loss to Iowa is the fact that the women's volleyball team opened up Big 10 play with two sweeps on the road over Northwestern and Illinois...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
On Friday night, the team came out a little slow in the first set, but picked things up and made quick work of the Wildcats. Megan Hodge (surprise, surprise) lead the team in kills with 16, hitting .414. Also, Blair Brown (who suffered a sprained ankle last weekend) seemed to be herself. She started out not getting set a lot (which I think may have been a byproduct of the coaching staff wanting to see how her ankle responded to game situations) but then got into a comfort zone and ended up with 10 kills.

The more anticipated match came on Saturday night, against the 15th ranked Fighting Illini. Give credit to the Illinois fans (and student section especially) for creating a great atmosphere, but it might have actually fired up the Lions more than it rattled them (frankly, can anything rattle this team? I say no. Not from what I've seen.). Illinois ended USC's 52 match winning streak back in 2004 (which at the time was the NCAA record), but Penn State had little trouble winning number 78 in a row, to extend their already absurd record.

In what I expected to be a very tight match, Penn State jumped out to a huge lead right off the bat, and ended up winning the first set 25-11. The second set was not as close as the 25-17 score indicates but the Illini did put up a fight in the final set before ultimately falling by another 25-17 score.

Freshman Darcy Dorton was the star of the night with 14 kills (team high) hitting .545. At one point, she had 8 kills with a perfect hitting percentage but "cooled off" (if you can call hitting .545 "cooling off") as the match went on. Megan Hodge quietly posted 12 kills as she continues on a torrid pace in her senior year. Arielle Wilson posted 13 kills, hitting .750. (I mean come on. Those numbers aren't even fair.)

The team put together a great game plan for Illinois and executed it almost to perfection (the opinion of myself and the staff as well). A good game plan is only effective if you can carry it out and Penn State did just that.

Defensively, Alyssa D'Ericco and Cathy Quilco were solid all weekend, flying under the radar as usual. And Alisha Glass set the table for her hitters, putting up 45 assists on Friday and 34 assists on Saturday.

As a whole, the team played very well, especially Saturday night against a quality opponent, and supposed challenger in the Big 10. It seems like this team can really step it up when need be. They're certainly not cocky but they are confident. And they have every reason to be. They still know that they have things to work on as well, and this season isn't going to be as smooth as last, but if this weekend is any indication, they're a serious National Title contender once again.

Penn State wrestlers welcome nations's #1 recruit to Big Ten

Share/Bookmark
David Taylor overwhelmed most of his high school opponents with little trouble, prompting every college to recruit him to wrestle for its program. But as Taylor grappled with senior Bubba Jenkins at practice last week, Jenkins toyed with the freshman, laughing as he earned a takedown...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
Taylor, who lost only two of his 182 high school matches, admits he hasn't scrapped with many wrestlers as strong as Jenkins, Frank Molinaro, or Cyler Sanderson. For a superstar lightweight high school wrestler, battling stronger teammates has taught Taylor to adjust to wrestling as a middleweight.

"I don't have the strength right now, but when that comes, it's not going to be as big of a surprise when I start wrestling [high-caliber] guys," Taylor said. "That's something that's going to come over time."

For now, Taylor is the gem of Penn State's recruiting class, which was already ranked in the top 10 in July before more talented freshmen joined the team. Ed Ruth, the No. 5 overall recruit in the nation, Jake Kemerer, ranked No. 7, and Luke Macchiaroli of Arizona highlight a group of eight freshmen who have the potential to lay the groundwork for a national championship runs throughout their careers.

Taylor tries to scope out the best competition in the room every day, often pulling Jenkins or Molinaro onto the mat to brawl. Molinaro spends a lot of time with the freshman in practice, but enjoys Taylor's company off the mat, too. The two played video games for hours on end last weekend.

On the mat, Molinaro said Taylor has made huge improvements since the Lions' summer training cycle.

"He's got unlimited potential," Molinaro said of Taylor. "Him training with me, and me training with him, I'm going to get better and he's going to get better too. He's going to make some big jumps from high school to college, training with bigger people."

"In high school, there's going to be some kids who are good and some kids who aren't as nice," Taylor said. "Here, if you're having a bad day, you're going to get beat up by everybody. You have to come in with the attitude everyday that you want to get better or it's going to be a long day."

Although nothing is finalized, the coaching staff plans to redshirt most of the freshmen to allow them more time to develop and learn. The plan for Taylor, baring injuries to other wrestlers, is to redshirt him this season, in preparation for a 2010-11 title run.

Dernlan said Taylor is weighing in at around 160 pounds right now, despite wrestling as a lightweight in high school.

Penn State QB Daryll Clark talks with Dan Krupinsky about Saturday's Whiteout

Share/Bookmark
I'm north of Chicago today, prepping for coverage of tonight's Women's Volleyball match at Northwestern and tomorrow's match at Illinois.

Despite the travel, I had my weekly talk with Daryll Clark for the ComRadio pregame show, which starts Saturday at 6:30 PM. Below are my notes from the interview.

But before reading my notes, listen to what Daryll told the Allentown Morning Call about what it's like being coached by Joe Paterno...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
Daryll Clark on being coached by JoePa...

  • The offense obviously slowed down in the air a little bit last week, but Daryll attributes that mainly to the production on the ground. The goal is to get balanced. He also acknowledged they had a few protection issues as the game went on.
  • Daryll thinks that the criticism of the offense is overblown. The struggles are expected with a brand new offensive line. He isn’t surprised at all and feels that everything is coming together. He thinks that they’re really close to getting where he wants to be on offense. The biggest thing about it is execution. That’s what they’ve been focusing on.
  • He acknowledges it will be tough without Sean Lee. There are guys who can step in for him, but obviously better to have him than not. He knows that Sean is working as hard as possible to be ready to go.
  • He continued to harp on the offensive line and the progress they’ve made. Neither the players nor the coaches have been surprised by anything they’ve done, other than in a positive sense.
  • Daryll still feels he owes the football team for what happened last year in Iowa. Doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t happen again. He knows what’s on the line. It’s a possibility he could get “too excited” for the game, but he knows that’s something he needs to guard against.
  • He's excited to play in the night game, Whiteout atmosphere. When I brought up to him that it was his last time he’d ever get to play in those conditions at Penn State, it kinda startled him. He admitted that had never crossed his mind until that point. It’s going to be really special for him.
I really get the sense talking to Daryll that the team is ready to go and fired up for this game. I expect the best performance so far this season.

Finally, check out these Daryll quotes from this week's presser...
“There’s nothing that anyone can say to me to make me believe that [last year's loss to Iowa] wasn’t my fault. Period. I feel like I owe our football team a lot given the fact of what happened last season.

“I hear about it all the time, people back home, from the media and everything, It’s my responsibility as a quarterback to put in the past because it happened last year.”
You can hear the entire interview with Daryll on the ComRadio pregame show, which starts Saturday at 6:30 pm. More details on the pregame show to come later.

Penn State Women's Volleyball Update

Share/Bookmark
As always, I talked with with assistant volleyball coach Dennis Hohenshelt earlier in the week about the teams upcoming matches and the state of the team...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
Here are the notes from my talk with the coach...
  • The staff thought that the teams play last weekend was a little bit uneven. They were pretty good on Friday night on the road against Temple, but not nearly as sharp on Saturday, particularly Saturday morning. Coach seemed to attribute quite a bit of this to the team's travel schedule, which is certainly a viable excuse. The girls returned from the road match against Temple in the very early hours of Saturday morning, and then played a match at 10 am against St. Francis.
  • Coach thinks that Cathy Quilico is playing very well right now, and probably had her best weekend against Temple and St. Francis. She's really starting to play at the level that the coaching staff envisioned for her. He also praised Alyssa D'Ericco for her passing (the poor libero never gets the credit that she deserves).
  • Blair Brown, who took a nasty spill last weekend in the early Saturday match, suffered only a sprained ankle and she's currently day-to-day. There's a pretty good chance she could play this weekend. If not, it's going to be up to Katie Kabbes to step up.
  • Blair's potential absence changes a few things. First of all, the team might have to switch some things up with the defense, as far as blocking goes. On offense, they might switch some of the offensive load to Megan Hodge (can she even take any more of the offensive load?!) But really, it won't be a DRASTIC change by any means.
  • Overall, the coaching staff is pleased with where the team is at this point in the season. As Coach said, there's a reason that they open up with these non-conference weekends. They need to get a feel for the team and find out what is working and what isn't. The staff is comfortable with the progress the team has made. The season is a "progressive climb" and they don't need to be at their best right now.
  • Northwestern is a very experienced team and return quite a number of players. Their middle hitters are very good and that's where they get the bulk of their offense from. Their middles are big, physical and athletic.
  • Illinois is a "very, very, very good team." Their left side hitters are very good and their right side hitter (Michelle Bartsch) plays a style very similar to Blair.
All in all, it should be interesting to see the team in their first weekend of Big 10 play. I'm definitely excited to get the conference season going. Remember, you can listen in to the audio broadcast featuring myself and Kevin Foedinger at GoPSUsports.com Check in every Friday to see my notes from my conversations with Coach Hohenshelt.

  • On tonight's Nittany Lion Hotline radio call-in show, JoePa said that Sean Lee is "very doubtful" for Saturday's game and Navorro Bowman will play. We expected that. What we did NOT expect was Joe's announcement that Nate Stupar is likely out with a sprained ankle he suffered in Tuesday's practice.
  • Penn State is ranked 4th in the Coaches poll and few who've watched the team believe that ranking. Ole Miss was ranked 4th in the AP poll. Their high placement was met with equal skepticism. The Rebels were beaten by unranked South Carolina tonight. Iowa is unranked. Are Penn State's captains paying attention?
  • There was an amusing story in today's Washington Post about Rutgers and Maryland fighting over Penn State's leftovers.
  • Handshakes are out and elbow bumps are in at Ohio State as part of a flu prevention effort. According to Coach Sweatervest, "You're supposed to elbow bump, that's the newest thing. So you go back to the office, give a little 'wuz happenin,' you know. So wash your hands a lot and elbow-bump, stay rested, stay hydrated."
  • The wheels are coming off the bus for Penn State's first 2009 victim, Akron. Starting quarterback Chris Jacquemain has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team policy. Recruiting coordinator and running backs coach Reno Ferri has been put on administrative leave, pending a review of whether he violated compliance requirements related to NCAA rules on recruiting. But wait, there's more! Sophomore defensive lineman Cowles Stewart has been suspended from the team after being charged with felonious assault.
  • Texas and USC are talking about a home-and-home in 2019-2020. (Thank goodness Penn State signed woeful Indiana State for 2011!)
  • The Big Ten announced its Halloween football schedule today. Penn State at Northwestern kicks off at 3:30 PM Central Time. Sunset is 5:45 PM local time, meaning most of the second half will be a night game, especially considering Evanston's lake-effect gloom from Labor Day through Easter.

The 115 MPH QB? Penn State Clips is skeptical

Share/Bookmark
There's a lot of b.s. in football numbers. For instance, Penn State lists Devon Smith at 5-7, 153, but according to Ron Musselman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "he is at least 2 inches smaller and 10 pounds lighter."

Smith has also supposedly been timed in 4.19. Now comes an even more ridiculous claim from Arkansas...
Subscribe to Penn State Clips via Email
"In a 2:30 p.m. game Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett will aim passes that have been clocked at 115 mph at the nation's third-ranked defense."

[Clips comment: Mallett started the first game of his career against Penn State at the Big House in 2007. By the time Anthony Morelli was done, Michigan was a 14-9 winner.

When Lloyd Carr retired, Mallett could see the handwriting on the wall and transferred back to his home state.

No room for tall pocket passers in RichRod's offense...even if they throw 115 MPH! (Cough, cough!)]
