Russ Rose keeps pulling 'em in...
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, middle hitter Aiyana Whitney, a rising senior who was named First Team All-New Jersey last season, has verbally committed to the Nittany Lions for the class of 2011.
Whitney, who had 279 kills, a .479 kill percentage, and 55 blocks last season, chose Penn State over Florida, Oregon, and two Big Ten schools, Ohio State and Nebraska. (We're still getting used to the thought of Husker Nation in the Big Ten!)
The Star-Ledger says Aiyana is 6-foot-1, but she is listed at an improbable 6-5, 135 on the USA Volleyball Web site.
The happiest moment of Aiyana's life occurred last year “when I found out that I made my first USA development camp and that I would be going to Colorado Springs that summer!”
Whitney has an impressive athletic pedigree. Her uncle, Ubusuku Abukusumo, played in the Major Soccer League for the Columbus Crew from 1997 to 2000. Another uncle, Mochtar Abukusumo, earned All-American honors as high school soccer player in New Mexico.
Aiyana's favorite book is The Secret Garden and her favorite musician is Beyonce.
Welcome Aiyana Whitney, we look forward to seeing you in Blue & White!
