Penn State National Championship Captain Battling ALS

Former Penn State fullback Steve Smith, a captain on the National Championship team of 1986, is in a death struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).

Smith was diagnosed in 2002 and given two or three years to live. His body is wasting away and he needs a computer to communicate, but he's still fighting.

Steve's body is nearly useless, but his mind is still sharp. According to his wife, Chie...
"He'll send me this e-mail, maybe only twice a year, that says, 'I'm really tired of being sick, but I don't want to give up because I want to play basketball with Dante again, and I want to be able to take Jazmin out on a date.

"'I want to go on vacation and sit on the sand and watch the ocean like we did before.'"
You can help the Smiths by making donations to help defray the cost of Steve's treatments. Former offensive coordinator Fran Ganter will make sure the money gets to them...
