Penn State Hockey Arena in works for two years

Share/Bookmark
It was a happy day when Terry & Kim Pegula announced they were funding a hockey arena and varsity hockey teams for Penn State.

But just how long was this project in the works? A lot longer than we'd imagined!

According to the project's "Design Professional Long List" on the Penn State Web site, "In December, 2008 Crawford Architects of Kansas City, MO prepared a feasibility study for a new hockey arena with 2 sheets of ice that would accommodate 6,000 spectators..."

The timing of this is interesting. Terry Pegula sold a minority state in his company, East Resources Inc., to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for $350 million. But those talks didn't commence until early 2009.

Pegula obviously realized he'd be getting a huge payday before too long and began talks with Penn State about a way to leave a legacy.

Hats off to the Pegulas! We look forward to the opening of the Pegula Pavillion (or whatever it will be called).
