Penn State basketball hoping to add Georgia Tech transfer

Georgia Tech basketball player Brian Oliver has decided to transfer rather than play for first-year coach Brian Gregory.

Oliver, who is from Delaware, also cited a desire to be closer to home. We're pretty sure State College is closer to Delaware than is Atlanta!

As a freshman Oliver was third in the ACC in 3-point accuracy, draining 38.1% in conference play. As a sophomore forward in the 2010-11 season, Oliver started 12 of 22 games, missing the last eight with a broken thumb. He averaged 28.0 minutes, 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.

According to our friends at Orange Fizz, Oliver has been contacted by Penn State, Delaware, La Salle, Missouri, and Seton Hall.

The Fizz spoke with Ken Sugiura, the Georgia Tech beat writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who said that Oliver is mainly a perimeter shooter who was unhappy about playing down low last season...
“Last year he played power forward which was a little out of position for him, which may have contributed to him wanting to leave.

“He’d like to play in a place where spot-up shooters are valued and maybe not as up-and-down as it looks like Georgia Tech might be with Brian Gregory.”
Does Penn State actually have a shot at Oliver? Things could get tough if the Big East powers who have expressed an interest (UConn, Georgetown, St. John's, and Syracuse) get serious about the process.

Wherever he goes, Oliver will have to sit out the 2011-12 season as a transfer and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
