We've been critical of Penn State's football schedule in recent years. Now things appear to be looking up.A nine-game Big Ten conference schedule is apparently coming in 2017. Prior to that, a three-game series with BYU looks closer to fruition...
A few months ago the BYU fan site Deep Shades of Blue reported that Penn State and BYU were close to inking a three-game series, including a neutral-site game.
They added, "According to sources close to the program, BYU has been able to leverage the long-time friendship between LaVell Edwards and Joe Paterno in order to rekindle their series from the early 1990′s."
Our working theory is that a neutral-site game will favor Penn State fans. Our best guesses are New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey and FedEx Field in Maryland.
Now comes these Tweets from BYU superfan TDAWGCOUG...
Word is BYU will host Penn State in '12, then '13 &'14 will most likely be a road and neutral game, not sure which date is which game...If '12-14 doesn't work, look for '14, 16-17.Looking at Penn State's future football schedules, if a 2012-14 series happens, we presume it would replace the home-and-home series with Virginia scheduled for 2012 and 2013.
It's unlikely Penn State would dump a home game in 2012, so a trip to Provo would almost surely happen on September 8th, when the schedule currently has a game at Virginia.
PSU already has a neutral-site game at New Meadowlands Stadium in 2013, the August 31st opener against Syracuse. So it's likely a BYU game in 2013 would replace the home game against Virginia on September 14th.
The 2014 schedule has an open date on September 20th, which opens the door for a neutral-site game.
The only fly in the ointment is that a 2014 neutral-site game would leave Penn State with just six games at Beaver Stadium, but a multi-million dollar guarantee from the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority or the Washington Redskins might be incentive enough to leave Happy Valley.
