We still hate the idea of Penn State scheduling games against I-AA teams, but our 2011 non-conference schedule is looking better and better...We were extremely critical when Penn State announced a game against I-AA Indiana State in June 2009.
We called Indiana State "the weakest opponent of the Joe Paterno era." This was certainly a reasonable conclusion, given that ISU went 2-54 from 2005-09, including a 33-game losing streak.
Not so fast, my friend! The Sycamores (5-3) have staged a remarkable turnaround and are ranked 18th in the latest I-AA poll. They have a huge game Saturday, hosting unbeaten and third-ranked North Dakota State.
Our second non-con game was Alabama. The Tide are undefeated and ranked second nationally. They have an epic showdown next weekend, hosting #1 LSU on Saturday night.
Our next non-con game was in Philadelphia, a struggle to the death with Temple. Michael Zordich's one-yard touchdown run with 2:42 to go (see photo above) provided the winning margin in a 14-10 PSU victory.
The Owls are 5-3 overall and sit atop the Mid-America Conference's Eastern Division.
Our final non-con game was Eastern Michigan. The Eagles are also 5-3 and in second place in the Mid-America Conference's Western Division, just a game behind Toledo.
Our 2011 non-con opponents are a collective 22-6 in their other games.
Hopefully this post will be good ammunition for our readers who engage in conversations with bitter Notre Dame or Pitt fans.
