Should Penn State coach Joe Paterno have 'done more'?

Share/Bookmark
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been pounded in the press for the more than a month for not having "done more" in the Sandusky/Second Mile Scandal. (Yes, we know Joe is no longer head coach, but we are going to use this convention just as all U.S. presidents are still referred to as President even after leaving office.)

Why didn't Joe follow up after reporting the 2002 shower incident to Tim Curley?

Following yesterday's preliminary hearing regarding the perjury charges against Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, Senior Deputy Attorney E. Marc Costanzo said the following in response to a reporter's question...
"Coach Paterno, when he testified under oath, prefaced his testimony that he was only giving at that time a summary of the details that he was told.

"So Coach Paterno was never asked, yet, on the record that's been made public, as to what details Mike McQueary gave him, although he intimated that there were, since he told the Grand Jury he was only giving them a summary of it."
Mr. Contanzo's claim appears to be at odds with Joe's statement of November 6th, which reads, in part, "[McQueary] at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report."

But there's something much more important being implied in Mr. Contanzo's statement.

Joe was apparently asked only enough questions to help secure indictments against Sandusky, Curley, and Schultz.

It appears that Joe was not asked what kind of follow-up action he took, if any.

The media mob has lambasted Joe for not having "done more." This is pure speculation that is without basis, given the information currently available.

We have heard rumors that Joe followed up with Tim Curley to varying degrees. This is also pure speculation that is without basis, given the information currently available.

Joe described the appropriate course of action for everyone during his November 6th statement...
"I understand that people are upset and angry, but let's be fair and let the legal process unfold."
We look forward to the day when the sun shines in every dark crevice of the Sandusky/Second Mile Scandal.
