- Joe had three undefeated seasons under his belt (1968, 1969, and 1973). He finished with five, adding 1986 and 1994.
- Joe had not yet won a National Championship. He won titles in 1982 and 1986, along with a #1 finish in the New York Times and Sagarin computer rankings in 1994.
- Joe had just 150 career victories. He finished with an all-time Division I record 409.
- Joe had won only a third of the 24 bowl victories he eventually accumulated.
